Résumé:  We investigate important but thus far overlooked factors shaping the relation between diversity in a top management team (TMT) and in the firm’s alliance portfolio (AP). If prior literature generally agrees that TMT diversity engenders a firm to broaden the diversity of its AP, we contend this relation actually depends on the level of component coreness (i.e., whether the innovation sought with alliance partners pertains to a component that is core or peripheral in the overall product architecture) and technological dynamism (i.e., whether firms in the environment are more or less technologically innovative), arguing instead these contingencies may at times reduce and at times increase this relation. Since increases in AP diversity also intensify cognitive complexity in managing the portfolio, we reason that to prevent harms to performance TMTs broaden AP diversity for core components but reduce it for peripheral ones. Further, when environmental technological dynamism rises, these relations become respectively even more positive and negative. Leveraging a unique 18-year population-level dataset from the Formula 1 industry, we develop a two-level model examining alliances between F1 teams and component suppliers. We end by discussing findings and implications for theory and practice on the TMT—AP relation.
